Every Day is Earth Day

The Lana'i High and Elementary 4th graders are a special group of kids--since the completion of our song "Singing to the World," they have been inspired to create more great art and music. Brooke Belista, who had some of her poetry featured in "Singing to the World," brought new song lyrics into school soon after "Singing to the World" had been completed. In collaboration with myself and another student, Dian Ozoa, "Every Day is Earth Day" was created.I was so impressed with the students' writing and motivation and it drove me to create the best song I possibly could. Coincidentally, we had a field trip coming up where we would go down to Mauna Lei beach and pick up trash. Our class was entered in a contest called "Debris From Our Sea," where the goal is to create artwork out of the plastic debris collected from the beach. I decided that I must get the song recorded as quickly as possible in order to go through the same process as "Singing to the World," and also shoot a music video. I was very lucky, and had the support of both 4th grade teachers, the school administration, and even a high school teacher, who lent me her recording studio for several school days.We also had a lot of help setting up the field trip--Castle and Cooke generously donated two of their shuttle buses to transport us down the other side of the island. Luckily, we were able to finish our recording of the song before the field trip, and had the class do a live performance down at the beach. Other than Mrs. Patterson hurting her ankle, the field trip was a complete success. We had seven truckloads of trash, and there's still a lot more down there--Mrs. Patterson hopes to make this at least a yearly event. After returning to school with all of the debris, the students were asked to make artwork out of it. Here are some of the creative designs they came up with:We sent our completed music video, along with pictures of our artwork, into the "Debris From Our Sea" contest, which is being sponsored by the Algalita Marine Research Foundation. We got a very positive response immediately, and although the contest winner hasn't been announced, they've featured our video in their blog as a special sneak peak into the "Debris From Our Sea" contest. My brother happens to work at Sea Life Park on O'ahu, and they're holding a big Earth Day event on April 22nd. He's been helping me with several things on this project, including creating the great design for our iTunes cover and possible T-shirt: We've been invited to perform our song live and show our music video at Sea Life Park for their Earth Day event, and have gotten a lot of help from a lot of people to make it happen. The Lanai High and Elementary School Foundation has been working with the Class of 2020, and generously partnered with Island Air, donating plane tickets and transportation for six students and two adults to attend the event!I feel extremely blessed to have gotten so much help, and worked with so many good people. We hope to make the most of our opportunity, and share our song and message with the world. Pasted below is the music video, and the lyrics to the song:<!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:"??
Exciting Updates for "Singing to the World"

Since my last post, a lot has happened--I'll start with some exciting news about our song, "Singing to the World:"After I finished the recording of the music, I started sending the song out to various organizations, and one of the places I sent it was to an organization called Pillars of Peace Hawaii. I saw that the Dalai Lama would be visiting Hawaii in April (this was towards the end of February), and thought our song matched well with the Dalai Lama's message. I was pleasantly surprised when a woman named Mary Charles responded enthusiastically. It turns our Mary owns Hotel Lanai here on the island of Lana'i, and I had played at a fundraiser she held a few years ago, so she knew who I was. Mary offered the services of her husband, Tom Kiely, who is the Chief Executive Officer for Xterra TV. Tom was nice enough to send over a TV director, Chris Bednarek to do a professional music video for our song!During the coordination of bringing Chris to Lanai, we found out that Jake Shimabukuro would be doing a concert at the school gym, as well as a presentation for the students at Lanai High and Elementary School. I got in touch with Jake's PR team, and when he came to the school, I was able to have a conversation with Jake and tell him about our song. He was extremely generous and down to earth, giving at least an hour of his time to come to our class and learn and play the song "Singing to the World" with our students. He even gave our class a private concert after we were done shooting our music video. To top it off, that night at his concert at the gym, he called the students and I up to perform our song live, and he even let me use his custom Kamaka ukulele! It was certainly an experience neither the students or I will ever forget! Here are some pictures from that day:We had originally planned to do the video shoot at our beach cleanup field trip in March, but weather forced us to reschedule. The day Chris Bednarek came over, we were lucky, and had just enough good weather to get all of the shots he needed. I gave him prior footage I had taken of the kids, as well as the video from the day Jake Shimabukuro came to visit. Chris took all that back to O'ahu, and edited everything, and came out with an absolutely fantastic music video.Soon after the production was complete, we found out from Mary Charles that our music video would be shown at both speaking events the Dalai Lama would be giving on April 14th and 15th at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, O'ahu! I am lucky enough to be attending with five high school students and another teacher. The 4th grade class will be able to view the event via live streaming in one of our classrooms at the school.I will be posting more updates on this exciting project after the event takes place, so please stay tuned!

Singing to the World--the story behind the song

I work at the Lanai High and Elementary school in Lanai City, Hawaii as an educational assistant with the 4th grade class. This is my fourth year working there, and I've been lucky enough to follow the same students--1st, 2nd, 3rd, and now fourth grade. It's like going through school all over again!Recently, the students have been studying poetry for their Language Arts class, and were asked to all write peace poems as part of a project where they each create a poetry book. One of the teachers I work with, Sandy Patterson, had previously shown me a video where a teacher wrote a peace song with the students performing the music. After reading through the students' poems, this sparked the idea in me to do something similar, but this time, have the lyrics be written entirely by the students. There was a lot of great writing to choose from, and I spent the next day or so compiling all of the most inspiring lines from the students' poems.I was able to turn their writing into lyrics that would fit into a commonly used song form:VerseVerseChorusVerseVerseChorusBridgeChorusWe wound up with a song called "Singing to the World:"Singing to the Worldmusic by Matt Glicksteinlyrics by Class of 2020Verse 1:Peace is gumdrops and raindropsGazing at the starsSpread all the peace to the worldLike jelly from a glass jarVerse 2:Peace is to be a good personKeeping your dreams aliveMaking things a little bit betterGiving your friend a high five!Chorus:I see the world in a different wayEveryone coming togetherWe all see the world in a peaceful wayJust love, only love, to make the world betterVerse 3:Peace is a world without sicknessWith clean land and fresh airLet's make people smile and happy With friends and family thereVerse 4:Peace is having funSinging to the worldEveryone is equalWith happy boys and girlsChorusBridge:Peace is laughter all aroundNo more tears, no more frownsPeace is a doveThe symbol of loveWith everyone freeThat's what peace means to meChorus (2X)After finalizing the lyrics, I went home and was inspired by a very simple musical instrument, the ukulele. The other fourth grade teacher I work with, Jerod Savage, teaches ukulele to his fourth grade students every year. Because I work in his class, I was also motivated to learn the instrument at the same time as the kids. I've been playing since the beginning of this school year, and I haven't been able to put it down--my wife can attest to that! I wound up writing the song using only the ukulele (my main instrument is piano). My thinking was that if I wrote a simple tune that could be sung with just ukulele, that I could teach the kids to not only sing the song, but also accompany themselves. The students were so enthusiastic about learning the song that I decided it would be neat to record their voices singing instead of mine. Over the past few weeks, we have recorded the whole class singing, as well as individual students. The instrumentation is ukulele, piano, and the students' voices. We are also in the process of turning the song into a music video that features the students, the school, and a little bit of Lanai. Our goal with the song is to spread our message of peace not only with the island of Lana'i and state of Hawaii, but to the world.I will be posting updates on this blog as we start the process of creating the video and sending the song/video out to the world! To listen to the song, you can visit my webpage, or hear it on Soundcloud.Pictured below are some of the 4th grade students I work with:

A Kitty Community

Since I was little, I've loved animals--especially cats. I had them as pets growing up, and my wife and I now also own a cat on Lanai. We moved there three and a half years ago, and upon arriving, we found a colony of about fifteen cats living around our apartment complex, Iwiole. Our downstairs neighbor fed and took care of them, along with a few kind volunteers. Being a cat lover, I couldn't resist, and also started feeding them. Our cat, Puka, was one of the fifteen, and promptly declared himself ours by placing himself on our porch every night and meowing until we fed him! We found out later that the previous tenant of our apartment also took care of Puka (who was formerly known as "Chase").Over the past few years, I've gotten to know Kathy Carroll. She is known as the "cat lady" and has helped us out several times when our cat has been sick or injured. Her husband is the artist Mike Carroll, and she also works at the Mike Carroll Gallery in Lana'i City. In October 2009, she helped start the Lana'i Animal Rescue Center (LARC), a spacious open air 14,000 square foot enclosure. Earlier this year, a large expansion was opened up, which includes a specially designed cat house with ladders, perches, and tunnels. The sanctuary is complete with spacious cubicles for sleeping, "pallet palaces" for hiding, and kitty-climbing jungle gyms. Here are a few pictures of the LARC:My wife and I are frequent visitors to LARC, as every Sunday there is an Open House from 3-5 where anyone can come visit and socialize with the cats (current total is about 286). Since the sanctuary is such a great place for the cats and they're so well taken care of (there are a team of volunteers that work there, and also a few paid workers), we decided that it was time for the Iwiole cat colony to be moved to the LARC. So far, we've successfully brought five cats to the shelter, and after the New Year, will be taking the rest down--that is, except for our cat, Puka, and our neighbor's cat, Stretch.During a recent visit to the LARC, Jocelyn Taal, a worker at the sanctuary, suggested that I write a song and make a video about the shelter. There were a couple of birthdays coming up of volunteers/workers and her idea was to give it to them as a gift. I went home that night, picked up my ukulele, which I've just started learning, and immediately had an idea for the song. After I finished the song, I visited the LARC several times and took pictures and movies to use for the song/video. After a lot of hard work, I produced a song/video called "A Kitty Community." The video can be seen on Youtube, or can be viewed below:My hope with this video is to help raise funds for the Lana'i Animal Rescue Center, and to also make other animal lovers aware that places like this actually exist and are possible with community support. To make a donation to the LARC, you can visit their donations webpage, or send a check to:Lana'i Animal Rescue CenterP.O.
Start Living (feat. JR Etrata)

I recently met JR Etrata, a senior at Lanai High and Elementary School (where I work). JR is physically disabled, and has to be stretched every day. In February/early March, I was trained on how to do this. The Educational Assistant who works with JR was going to be out, and I would have to take over his duties. I began working with JR several times over the next month, and got to know him. I found out that he was into music--specifically hip-hop and rap--and that his dreams were to someday work as a DJ. I also learned that for graduation in May, he was going to surprise everybody, and walk in without using his wheelchair. This gave me an idea: What if JR could have a special song playing when he came in? More specifically, what if JR and I could write a song specifically for that?On a day in late April, when I was stretching JR, we came up with the lyrics to the song, and decided that the verses of the song would be for JR to rap, and the choruses would be sung by his talented classmates. Here are the lyrics we came up with:Start Livingby Matt Glickstein and JR EtrataVerse 1:Skankin' down the aisle with my buddies at my sideI look up at my mama and her face is filled with prideSittin' on the stage looking out at every faceGot through all the fazes, and made it to this placeChorus:This is not my end, this is my beginningListen for J-Dawg, he'll always be winningThis is not your end, this is your beginningListen with your heart, and start livingVerse 2:In my future I can see it, I'll be walking down the streetPeople calling my name, "J-Dawg, lay down the beat."When I roll into the party, give a shout out to my brotherEven though you're gone, we'll always be with each otherChorus repeatEnd:"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." (class of 2011 senior quote)I then met with JR about a week later, and came up with the melody to the chorus, and the specific beat that JR wanted to use in the song. I worked on producing the track, and gave JR a CD (with me rapping!) so he could start practicing.A couple of weeks before graduation, I was able to bring my recording equipment into school, and record JR and his three classmates--Neidine, Chelsea, and Ceysha. They were all very talented and incredibly quick learners--we were able to record the whole song in just over an hour. Yesterday--May 21, 2011--JR graduated, and walked in to a standing ovation, while the original song we wrote, "Start Living" was played over the loud speakers. Needless to say, it was a tear-jerking moment for everyone at the ceremony, and something I will never forget. The song can be heard on my homepage or at Soundcloud, and is a free download. Instead of making any money, we'd like to be able to get this inspirational song and message of hope to as many people as we can. JR and I proved that anything is possible, and you can achieve your dreams. I also hope to be able to secure video from the ceremony and make this special moment available to the public. To end, here are a few of photos of JR that we took a few days before graduation.

Steppingstone

The reason I'm starting this blog is because "Songs for a Better World" is my mission statement. From the time I started writing music, this has been my goal. My graduating class in high school was only 45 students, and we became extremely close over the course of our senior year. I had played piano from an early age, but never really thought about composing my own song. I wanted to do something for my classmates, so as a gift to them, I wrote an instrumental piano piece that I played at our "Senior Aloha," a ceremony that was held specifically for the students before graduation. The feeling I had when performing my own song was indescribable. I fell in love with composing, and decided to make that my major in college.Writing the "perfect song" is not my goal--as that will always be impossible. I want to somehow effect people in a positive way with my music. Even if it makes their life just a little better for a short amount of time, then writing that song was worth it. Music is about emotion, and it's how I express myself--the best songs have always come during the most emotional times in my life. The recent tragic events in Japan inspired me to write a song called, "Steppingstone." Throughout my life, there have been many moments of inspiration, and this was an especially strong one. I am a songwriter, although I don't usually write my own lyrics and prefer collaborating with other writers. However, this time I received the gift of both melody and words. I'm from Hawaii, and although we had some minor damage from the tsunami that was caused by the earthquake in Japan, we were okay. After seeing the images and videos on TV, I feared the same would happen here. I can't imagine what it is like in Japan now. The words to "Steppingstone" had such clear imagery that I wanted to create a video that would capture the story. Going through the photos and videos was a moving experience all on its own. My intent with the song and video is to help anybody suffering from this horrific disaster, and also make this situation relatable to the average citizen. This kind of tragedy could happen to anybody at anytime, and if we all did just a little, it would make the world a better place. "Steppingstone" is available now for sale on my website, as well as iTunes. I am donating a majority of the proceeds to The Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. For just 99 cents, you can make a difference. Thanks to Stasia Estep (http://www.songbirdsounds.com) for recording vocals, and Jerry Brocklehurst (http://www.newboomermusic.com) for recording and mixing the song.Posted below is the video:
